Sydney’s Most Instagrammable Street Is Blooming With Jacaranda Trees

See a stunning purple archway in Sydney at the famous McDougall Street in Kirribilli this October and November.

Jacaranda Season is fast approaching and the city will soon be drenched in a lilac haze. While there are plenty of picture-perfect spots to explore if you want to see jacaranda bloom in the city, there’s one where tourists and locals tend to flock more than the others. We’re talking about the Insta-famous McDougall Street in the leafy suburb of Kirribilli which puts on a stunning show of purple when spring rolls around. It’s a relatively quiet corner of town for most of the year but transforms into a jacaranda paradise for about a month when the weather gets warmer.

This is a residential area so please be mindful of the locals and of incoming traffic on the street.

It’s quite possibly the most photographed street in Sydney this time of the year and if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, it’s because dozens of jacaranda trees form a perfect purple tunnel at this gorgeous spot. There’s been such a heavy influx of tourists in recent years that the cops have had to be around to keep things in order. Here’s a quick guide to the beautiful canopy of purple trees this spring season.

When can I see jacaranda trees on McDougall Street?

The best time to see jacaranda trees in Sydney is from late October until November. But because of a drier and warmer winter than usual, the trees have started to bloom earlier than usual so you can catch a glimpse this October.

Is there parking on McDougall Street?

The street is usually packed with tourists with little to no parking space so it’s best to take public transport.

How can I get there?

The street is an 8-minute walk from Milsons Point Station.

Are there other places to see Jacaranda in Sydney?

Yes! Sydney is filled with many picturesque streets and suburbs that are a photographer’s dream when the jacarandas bloom. Some of our favourites include the harbourside suburb of Lavender Bay and the Royal Botanic Garden.
