Prep your feeds, jacaranda season has arrived. Here's where to find the best blooms

Every bloom-lover’s heart beats for that sweet, magical springtime hue: jacaranda purple. When jacaranda season begins (from October through to November) in Australia and our streets are once again bursting with blooms, it signals for many that summer is on its way.

Of course, you’ll see Jacaranda trees spotted in many corners of the country, but for solid clouds of these flowers, there are some areas more populated in this vibrant hue that a worth a trip to see. If you want to embrace the most Instagrammed time of the year in Australia, here’s where to find the best jacaranda trees.

University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD

The University of Queensland in Brisbane has become a go-to for picturesque purple picnics during spring, and is now a firm a go-to for photo shoots – for students it marks ‘purple panic’, better known as exam season. New Farm Park, by the Brisbane River, is also a haven for Jacaranda gazers with over 140 jacaranda trees that burst into bloom every October.

Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, VIC 

Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens (although the Victorian capital is a late bloomer when it comes to Jacarandas, so you’ll likely need to wait until around December).

Applecross, Perth, WA 

Aspot that is so popular with locals and tourists it dedicates an annual festival to the purple flower. The free community event, the Rotary Jacaranda Festival, takes place during peak bloom, in November.

Inglewood, Perth, WA 

This inner-city suburb is a convenient spot to catch a quick snap of the gorgeous tree in bloom. Wind your way along Sixth to Tenth and be treated to a sea of purple.

Subiaco, Perth, WA

This suburb is so bountiful with jacaranda come spring, it has a street named after them. Stroll down Old Jacaranda Way and marvel at the spectacular colour. Don’t limit yourself though, the rest of Subiaco has plenty of jacarandas to go around.

Grafton, Northern Rivers, NSW

If you’re eager to flood your social feeds with purple flowers, the Australian Jacaranda capital is (drum roll, please): Grafton. Come November, this unassuming town in Northern New South Wales uses the power of purple to draw in the ‘grammers to its tree-lined streets.

Circular Quay & The Rocks, Sydney, NSW 

View the stunning trees set against the backdrop of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour, especially at First Fleet Park, situated between between the museum and the ferry wharf.

Paddington, Sydney, NSW

Particularly, Oxford Street. This inner-city luxury shopping haven is in full bloom come jacaranda season. Oxford Street is the highlight, but you’ll also find the photogenic trees on Glenmore Road and Five Ways. 

Kirribilli, Sydney, NSW 

Lavender-hued arches form canopies over streets in Kirribilli, come spring time. Many locals and tourists flock here to capture the perfect picture but just remember to be road safe at all times.

Lavender Bay, Sydney, NSW 

Lavender Bay is home to the heritage-listed Wendy Whiteley’s Garden, from where you can take in a spectacular view back to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the harbour foreshore dotted with jacarandas.

Hunters Hill, Lower North Shore, NSW 

This one is a bit of a local secret. The local Town Hall, Hunters Hill Historical Society and Alexandra St are especially purple during spring, so much so that the Hunters Hills Trust organises guided walking tours through the suburb’s best streets.

University of Sydney, NSW 

For history buffs, the much-loved jacaranda at the University of Sydney stood for 88 years in the quadrangle before it died in 2016. The planting of a native flame tree and the clone of the original jacaranda was celebrated in 2017. As the new tree grows, it’s likely also to become a living legend on the University grounds.

Parramatta, NSW

 Head west to Parramatta for some serious purple tree-chasing. Prince Alfred Square, Centenary Square, Elizabeth Farm and Parramatta Park are all host to tree-lined paths brimming with jacarandas.

Macarthur, NSW 

Here you’ll find a festival dedicated to the jacaranda tree during spring. Head here for a picture-perfect, fun-filled day out.

CBD, Adelaide, SA

The CBD is a grid of streets lined with Jacarandas. Go for a leisurely stroll to stretch your legs and you’ll see plenty, especially along Grote Street, Carrington Street, and Wakefield Street.

Goodwood, Adelaide, SA

This inner southern Adelaide suburb is where you can find jacaranda tress all over. But locals think that Trevelyan Street is where to get the best snap as the street is fully lined with the purple tree.
