Ly Son island is a secluded island for solo traveler

Ly Son, I prefer it as it is now, but less littering.

I arrived on the island after taking a passenger boat from Sa Ky port in Quang Ngai. Prior to that, I flew from Saigon to Danang, where I spent a night. Following that, I traveled by train from Danang train station to Quang Ngai train station, which took approximately 3 hours. It's important to note that there is no public transportation available from Quang Ngai train station to Sa Ky port, which is about 20 kilometers away. Therefore, you'll need to take a taxi there. You'll encounter several taxi drivers offering rides, some independent and others affiliated with companies. We paid 300,000 VND for the trip to Sa Ky, and the same amount for the return journey. Considering this additional cost alongside the train fare, which was already 300,000 VND per person, it may be more economical to opt for a passenger bus from Da Nang rather than the train.

The journey got off to a rocky start with rain and turbulent seas preventing us from boarding the boat on the same day we arrived in Sa Ky. This led to an unexpected overnight stay in Sa Ky. The following morning didn't show much improvement, with cloudy skies, light rain, and rough seas causing discomfort on the boat. It was quite unpleasant, to be honest, with the sound and smell making the experience less than enjoyable. However, our luck changed for the better the next day. The sun was shining brightly, the sky was clear, and the sea was calm, providing a smooth and enjoyable ride. It's essential to pay attention to the weather forecast in Sa Ky. If conditions aren't favorable, it's advisable to wait in Da Nang until the weather improves. Da Nang offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained without enduring the unpleasantness of Sa Ky and rainy Ly Son.

As you can observe, the island is quite sizable, approximately three times larger than Hon Son Island, which I've previously covered in an article. Its primary economic activities revolve around seafood and garlic harvesting. The garlic here holds a special distinction internationally, renowned for its exceptional quality, nutritional value, and rich antioxidant content. Cultivated in the island's predominantly volcanic soil, infused with beneficial ions and nutrients, this garlic has captured the admiration of the Japanese palate. Don't miss the opportunity to purchase "black garlic," a Japanese fermentation method that involves aging garlic at 90 degrees Celsius for 30 days. This process transforms the garlic, imbuing it with a delightful blend of sweetness, tartness, and a taste reminiscent of caramel candy.

Finally, there's a smaller island nearby where you can hop on a small boat and explore the coral reef through diving. Before embarking on this adventure, it's advisable to seek out the tour guide to arrange for diving equipment rental and transportation. It's a fantastic experience. Additionally, be sure to check out some of the local foodie bistros and sample their delicious cuisine.
