Roman Ruins of Conímbriga, Penela Castle and Buracas do Casmilo
The Roman Empire had an enormous weight in our culture and evidence of this can be found everywhere in the Sicó area. In this adventure, we will discover the complex of the Roman Ruins of Conímbriga where you will be able to contemplate the architectural capacity of the Roman people and the way they lived. From here we will head towards another “ex-libris” of this region, the Buracas do Casmilo, majestic geological formations that were once complexes of underground caves that are now exposed to the surface. We take a leap back in time and arrive in Penela to visit the imposing Castle that occupies a large part of the town and which since the beginning of Portugal has been an important part of Mondego's defensive line. Finally, we will see remnants of a structure that was used to defend against attacks such as the Castle of Germanelo, here more than the castle is the view that plays the main role. Lousã Schist Villages
Despite the vestiges of human presence dating all the way back to the prehistoric era, it is only during the Medieval Ages that populations started to settle on this territory. From a count of 27 historic villages that make part of the “Schist Villages Network”, our visit will focus mainly on two of them - Candal and Talasnal - which contain constructions dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. These are located at the Lousã Mountain, a few kilometers away from the city of Coimbra!

Roman Ruins of Conimbriga and Sicó Mountain, half-day from Coimbra
After picking up in Coimbra, we head towards Serra de Sicó where we will travel through rural villages that give us the opportunity to appreciate the fauna and flora where the countless olive trees, walnut trees, oaks, small vegetable gardens, sheep and goats stand out. Arriving at the cheese capital DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin), in the village of Rabaçal, we have a coffee and buy the famous cheese typical of the region. Then we will visit the complex of the Roman Ruins of Conímbriga. At the Monographic Museum of Conímbriga, we will discover a wide collection of mosaics, sculptures, coins and numerous domestic and agricultural utensils. Outside where the excavations took place, we will visit the aristocratic houses, and all of public buildings. We go back in time with over 2,000 years of history. After the visits, we return to Coimbra, using some of the pilgrimage trails of the Portuguese Central Way of the Caminhos de Santiago.(St James Way)
