Our drive to the trailhead is just over 1-hour in private transport from Antigua to the Park Office. As our group moves up one of the myriad of trails on the mountain, your Old Town guide will direct the group toward active surface or sub-surface lava flows near the summit. He will then decide where to make camp for the evening, and arrange the group’s campsite close to one of Pacaya’s many beautiful vistas. A freshly prepared dinner will be readied for the group. Hot coffee and tea will keep your group warm after sundown, and after a good night’s rest in tents and bags views of surrounding highland volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango will greet campers at first light. Our Pacaya Day tour starts at 7:00 am. Our driver will pick you up at your hotel´s door. The transportation services are private for you and your companion or group. All our vans are A/C, reclinable seats and cooler on board. The drive from Antigua to Pacaya Volcano National Park takes 1:30hrs.

The activity difficulty is moderate, taking around two hours. Once you go down, you have free time for refreshments. The detailed itinerary goes as follows:

Please note that Pacaya is an ACTIVE volcano, and due to safety regulations, you cannot walk up to the summit. Pacaya spews hot ash, rock, and lava, and travelers visit at their own risk. This is the easiest volcano climb in Guatemala that gets you up close and personal with an active volcano, however, it is still a two-hour uphill hike.

Hike one of Guatemala’s 3 active volcanoes! Pacaya is an active complex volcano that rises to an elevation of 2,552 meters. This is a 2-hour hike so suitable footwear is required. This hike starts at 6:00 AM and you return to Antigua around 1:00 PM or start at 1:00 PM and return around 8:00 PM. Pacaya volcano is one of the many (active) located around Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala, and perhaps the most accessible. The last big eruption of Pacaya volcano was in 2010. Until 2016, it was actually possible to see lava from up close during the hike – different tour companies took different routes. During sunset hikes, as soon as it got a bit dark, the volcano could be seen throwing smoke and lava.

Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America and easily accessible with a height of 2552 masl. For more than 50 years the volcano has maintained a moderate eruptive phase. It is one of the most recommended volcanoes for its beautiful landscapes.
The ascent is a moderate walk with some points of medium-high difficulty that offers wonderful panoramic views.

The tour starts from Antigua. After one-hour ride, you will arrive at the entrance of the National Park where you have to pay the cost of the admission Q100.00 p/p.
We suggest to wear hiking boots, and a hiking stick (if you don´t have one you can rent it for Q5.00). This tour can be walking or in a horse, (horse is not included). After walking along the trails of the volcanic sand with great views, you will reach the plateau from which you can see the main crater of the volcano. For safety reasons is not possible to visit it, but you will see some steam emanations produced by the heat of the volcano.

We start from Antigua Guatemala towards the Department of Escuintla- to the town of San Francisco de Sales where the ascent begins on the hike to the Pacaya volcano, incredible views on the ascent such as the Laguna de Calderas located in the municipality, incredible views of petrified rivers of magma at the top and a very beautiful view of other volcanoes such as the Agua y Fuego volcano from the top.
