Before we start our hike in the surrounding hills, we visit the famous medieval town of Durnstein. The hiking trail is considered one of the most beautiful in the whole Wachau region and offers fantastic views over the valley. The unique landscape has an almost Mediterranean touch with its holm oak forests. As well, we will visit the striking and well-preserved castle ruins of Durnstein before ending the day in one of the local wine taverns (optional).

On this full-day private tour, travel from Vienna to Salzburg and explore the Wachau region, which is recognized by UNESCO, and the Salzkammergut Lake Region. Highlights of the itinerary include visits to the picturesque village of Duernstein, where you can learn about the Robin Hood legend, Lake Attersee, which served as the model for many of Gustav Klimt's landscape paintings, and the quaint community of Mondsee, home to the church from the Sound of Music. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation in Salzburg; if desired, you can take the train back (2h20min).

Heading out of Vienna, the tour travels west towards the town of Melk, home to Austria’s most impressive Baroque Benedictine Abbey. Guests can join a boat ride along the Danube at this point, boarding at Melk and disembarking at Dürnstein. Whichever route your tour takes, you will find yourself passing through villages amongst wine terraces clinging to the steep hills behind them, until you eventually reach Dürnstein, famous as the site of the legend of Richard the Lionheart’s imprisonment and the troubadour Blondel who found the King and arranged for him to be freed. From here, passing through medieval towns beside the Danube, you soon reach Krems, at the heart of the Wachau. The evening will be spent at a Heuriger, one of the region’s famed wine taverns, after which the tour will return to Vienna.

This private tour allows you to immers into the St. Martin's Day festivities in the Wachau valley that includes having an early roasted goose dinner before the mass in the Weißenkirchen parish church, a fortified church from the 13th century, which is surrounded by a tower fortification. Then we drive 1 hour further to the concentration camp in Mauthausen and let ourselves be guided through the entire facility with its many barracks, fortifications and watchtowers. We also visit the museum inside and learn all the essentials about everyday life in the camp.

Our way back to Vienna takes us to the medieval town Dürnstein, situated in the most beautiful section of the Danube for our last stop. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage area. Way back from the Crusades, King Richard 1st Lionheart was captured here. We follow his footsteps on the Lionheart's path
